SOCIAL JOTTINGS

Mr. and Mrs. 11. Lawrence, who were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Nolan, Imre returned to Christchurch. Mrs. G. McLean, of Auckland, who has been the guest of her daughter, Mrs. F. B. Barker, concluded her visit here last week and journeyed south. Miss Ferguson, of Cambridge, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs. Bruce Muir, has returned home.

Mrs. F. W. Riacli is the guest of Mrs. F. W. Bowman, Napier. Miss E. Macfarlane, of Napier, is visiting Gisborne, and is the guest of Mrs. Bain. Messrs ,T. C. N. Thomas and E. Maude visited Lake Itotoiti last week.

Miss Joy Barker was tho guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. MacLaurin at Hangaroa last week. Mrs. Tomlinson is the guest of her mother, Mrs. E. G. Matthews, Wainui road. Miss Phyllis Buxton, of Christchurch, is the guest of Miss M. Il'caslev.

Miss Jocelyn Ludbrook, who has been the guest of Miss Cecil Barker at “Ulvcrstone,” has returned to thfr coast, accompanied by Miss Cecil Barker.

Mr. and Mrs. 11. B. Williams, who have been on an overseas tour, including Great Britain and the Continent, arc on their way home by the Osterlcy, which is due about December 13. Miss Muriel Barker returned to Waimata with Mrs. V. Savage, who has been visiting town for a few days. Mrs. Ackroyd and Miss Aliiile Akroyd, who have been visiting Gisborne, left with Mr. 11. Johnston by c.ar for Auckland yesterday. Mrs. Parke Pittar is accompanying them as far as Hamilton, where she is visiting for a few weeks. Mr. G. Euncimau and the Misses Kunciman, of Waipiro Bay, have taken a beach cottage at "Wainui for a few weeks.

Mrs. Wilson and Miss K. Mcßae, of “Springhill,”, Frazcrtown, left on Sunday for Auckland, via Hawke's Bay, on a visit to the north.

Mr. and Mrs. K. Henderson returned last week from a visit to relatives in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith have returned from a visit to Hamilton, Rotorua and Taupo, and taken up their residence in Stout street. Mrs. R. Watson invited a number of friends to lunch on Monday at “Linhurn,” and in the afternoon the guests indulged in tennis, which was thoroughly enjoyed. A delicious afternoon tea was served before the guests motored home. Mrs. A'. Savage was hostess at her home yesterday afternoon, when a number of town friends motored out to afternoon tea and spent a pleasant a ftemoon.

Mrs. Walker, of Gisborne, is a visitor to Wellington. Mrs. J. Cooper, of Morere, is visiting her mother in Napier, the latter not being in very good health. Mrs. C. Margoliouth has returned from a visit to Hawke's Bay. The Rev. L. 11. Fenn intends leaving on a visit to England in about a fortnight’s time. Lady Nolan, who has been visiting England, expects to reach Auckland this week.

Last Friday night t ho Gaiety Theatre, Wairoa, was well filled for the breaking-up dance and demonstration arranged by Miss Nell Pittar to terminate her classes in Wairoa. The floor was in excellent condition, and after an opening speech by Mr. G. V. Chamberlain the young pupils gave a demonstration of exercises and dancing, showing the excellent progress made during the year. Loud applause greeted the items, which were fully enjoyed by numerous onlookers in the dress circle. Miss Wilson’s orchestra played enjoyable music throughout the evening, and Miss Pemberton played an extra. Another thoroughly appreciated item was a demonstration of the flat ballroom Charleston by some tiny pupils, Tim Signal! and Joyce Nolan, and Miriam Howell and Brian Barker, who took the floor alone and executed the steps in a creditable manner. Miss Nell Pittar and Mr. Stuart Skcet, of Gisborne, gave a fine exhibition of the Charleston, including many intricate steps. The floor was then/ free 1 to all, and dancing continued till midnight. Refreshing drinks and ices were served between the dances, and a delicious supper was served on the stage, where the long supper-table was adorned with crystal bowls and vases of glorious shaded roses set at intervals. The dance will long be remembered by the younger generation in Wairoa, where children’s entertainments are infrequent occurrences. Miss Pittar was attired in a smart frock of black georgette encrusted m jot beads, and cut with a V neck and pleated skirt, and offset; with .a shaded red rose on one shoulder, and a handsome fringed shawl of pink crepc-de-chino embroidered in pastel tones. Her sister, Mrs. 11. fetovell,

was wearing a becoming frock of black georgette, with a lace yoke and full skirt revealing large embroidered roses on the under-dress, and a fringed ivory shawl figured in red roses.

The club members provided a delicious afternoon tea, which was served from the pavilions, where the tables were decked with spring flowers. Players were very keen, and the courts wore in constant demand. Among those at Kaiti were Mr. and Mrs. Neal, Mr. and Mrs. N. 11. Bull, Mr. aud Mrs. 0. Bull, Mr. and Mrs. S.
