OCTOBER WEATHER

METEOROLOGIST'S SUMMARY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON; Last night. The following weather summary for October is supplied by the Director of the Meteorological Oflice: — During October the rainfall was, as a rule, poorly distributed in time and place, and October N and October 23 were the only days on which it was at all of a general character. The total for the month was considerably below normal over the whole of the North Island and in the Marlborough arid Nelson provinces in the. South Island. Canterbury and Otago had a moderate excess, while in Westland the differences from normal were slight., The pressure was chiefly of the westerly type, and the disturbances of slight to moderate intensity. The changes 'were generally too rapid to allow of rain developing to any extent. On October 23, however, a very intense cyclone developed east of the North Island, and on October 24 the Chatham .Islands barometer fell to 29.07 in. From October. 23 to -."5 strong southerly winds to gales were experienced, and very cold temperatures prevailed in the rear of this cyclone. Light falls of snow occurred on October 23 and 24 in various parts of the South Island, and i also in the high central area of the North Island*ground. Frosts were reported on the mornings of October 2") and-26, more especially in Canterbury and Otago, but the damage to fruit trees was, fortunately only slight. There was a tendency foi anti-cyclon-es to move in the more. northern latitudes, but one which controlled the weather between October 2.*) and 2!) was centred over . NeV Zealand on October 27 with a pressure as high as 30.50 ii). On the whole, fair to line weather predominated, with moderate to strong northi westerly winds. The cold spell from October 215 to 25 was, however, severe, especially in Canterbury and Otago, and sonie losses of lambs occurred. Though a dry mouth, it Avas a good spring month, and was particularly favorable for sheep, but less so owing to dryness for the dairy industry.
