The new air .speed record set up by the Italian, Major l)e Bernardi, is not likely to stand iong unchallenged. Preparations are. already nearing completion ni this country for an attempt at over 30U miles an hour. Wtten Flight-Lieufenant Webster put up the. speed record of 28b miles an hour in the. Schneider Trophy race his speed included flying round two acute cornel's, and as the necessary slowing up to take these comers must have had a detrimental effect on his average speed, experts are confident- that the Sirpermarine Napier is capable of beating .Major Bernardi's ' speed on a straight course. Average speed tests will take place at Calshot over a measured course of three kilometres, which will be Mown twice in each direction, the average speed of four flights being tfiat counted in the record. It is probable the pilot will be, Flight-Lieut. Worsley, who was second in the Schneider Trophy race, and the machine will he an improved ■Supermanne Napier.
