SECOND CLASS MAILS
DISSATISFACTION AT SERVICE RETAIL BUSINESSES AFFECTED Further comment on the unsatisfactory nature of the service to Gisborne fori second-class mail matter was heard at 1 yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the council of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, when further action was decided upon. Judging by the present outlook, Mr. J. Chrisp stated, it would be another year or two before the position would be They stiould form a committee to discuss the matter with the postmaster. The delivery of parcels in the town, he said, also was unsatisfactory; those places near the post offices obtained their parcels a great deal earlier than the premises at the other end of the town. The matter was of great importance, and the present situation was a great setback to retail business. Many people were disappointed that the Chamber had not gone further with the matter.
The president, Mr. H. F. Fhrster, said he understood that one man was willing to carry parcels from Gisborne to Napier at 6d per parcel. Mr. Ohrisp understood that one firm was willing to make a daily delivery at a price. A member: And it’s the price that counts.
Mr. Ohrisp added that the. Government should give Gisborne some assistance. Mr. L. Miles pointed out that the chief postmaster, Mr. Fisher, had attended a meeting of the chamber and explained that the cost of an overland service was prohibitive, so that it appeared useless to go to Mr. Fisher again. Mr. H. H. DeCosta moved that the president, Mr. Chrisp, and the secretary, Mr. W. Hamilton Irvine, be a 'committee to go further into the matter. It was mentioned that even, it an express delivery fee were paid, a parcel would not bo sent overland if it- were not a small one, and that it would have to wait for the first boat. Mr. DeCosta mentioned an instance m which a parcel he sent from Gisborne took days to reach an address in New Zealand. The motion was carried.
