LIBERATION OF TROUT

STOCKING P.B. STREAMS £IOO TO BE EXPENDED After some discussion on the report of Mr A. Keen, of Wairoa, upon the advisability of stocking the streams in the Poverty Bay district with trout, the East Coast Acclimatisation Society, at its meeting iin Gisborne on Saturday afternoon, resolved that £IOO should bo expended' on the liberation of trout ova in the upper Hangaroa and Yv'harekopae streams. Mr. Kean’s comprehensive report was publisher,! in .Saturday’s issue, and after it had been read at the meeting, members expressed complete satisfaction with the helpful nature of it, Mr. S. V. Beaufoy suggesting at the outset that not more, than £2OO should be spent in stocking the streams. The chairman, Mr. B. H. Aislabie, referred to the funds available, and stated j

that at present the society had £96 in the bank, and £226 in the Post Office Savings Bank. A number of license fees wore still outstanding, and the total revenuo for the year should be approximately £600; last year about £64 had come in from fishing licenses. One member commented that it would be unfair to expend more than the £64 on fish, as it would mean that the gunmen were supplying the balance and deriving no benefit from it, but to this the chairman replied that in, the past much of the money from fishing licenses had gone to shooting, and it was only fair that the fishermen should now have 'a turn. LIMITING THE COST. Diverse opinions were expressed on the suitability of the Watkohu stream for stocking, and some, members considered that the stream earth'd too great a quantity of silt. The majority, however, concurred with Mr. Koan. Mf. S. V. Beaufoy urged that tie* Streams recommended should be stocked, and that those of which there, nvas some doubt should he left until further information was available. It would be unwise, he said, to slock streams where the life of the fish liberated would be doubtful. He. moved that 2U0.000 ova be procured and liberated in the upper Hangaroa and Whnrekopne st reams. When it was suggested that the cost of the ova be limited to £6O, the chairman expressed the opinion that the shooting men should not raisie any objection to spending a substantial sum in the manner suggested by 'Mr. Kean. Several members thought that something definite as regards the cost should he fixed, but Mr. Broadhnrst pointed out that if the streams were not stocked there would bo no demand, for licenses. After Mr. Mohckton had moved an amendment, that- the cost of the ova liberation be ‘limited to £IOO, Mr. Beaufoy altered his motion to embody the amendment, which was accordingly withdrawn. The motion ryns then carried unanimously.

In discussing the ways and means of hatching and liberating ova, Mr. P. *l. Roberts offered to take charge 'of hatching 60.000 ova and liberate them in the Wharekopae stream. Mr. Vfiitch offered to do likewise with a similar number for the upper Hangaroa. These offers were accepted, and! it was decided to telegraph for 50,000 to he sent immediately. LIBERATION 1 OF BIRDS. In connection with a suggestion that quail should be obtained for the district. Ihe secretary reported that none was available from Nelson, but he had had an offer from Olorohanga at. 5s a pair. This matter was deferred for discussion at a Committee meeting at a later date; in the meantime the secretary to obtain further details of the offer. A letter was read from Mr •tides' Dormer, stating that a Waimana resident had 100 phensants for sale and also suggesting that, partridges and green plover bo given a trial in Poverty Bay.
