A TRIP TO INDIA
A. large and representative gathering of Hawkc's Bay nurses attended the Trained Nurses' Association meeting in Napier to welcome back their president, Miss Rose Macdonald, who during the last; nine months has been visiting India and the Malay States. Miss Macdonald, who has a special gift for observation and detail, gave a very interesting account of her various experiences 'and painted beautiful word pictures of the scenery, the quaint habits and costumes, and the modes of life of the \arious natives she encountered on her tour.
Many of I lie glimpses of scenery, Miss Macdonald said, reminded her of New Zealand. The beautiful drive along the seafront or* Colombo recalled the Marino Parade of Napier, whilst .a more material reminder of 1 lie Dominion was the. presence of kauri gi.ua trees in flu; wonderful gardens near Candy. These trees, they were told, "eanic from a place called New Zealand.'•
Miss Mae<*onald spent the larger portion of her holiday at the tea plantation district of Caeher, <>(><) miles inland from the nearest seaport, Calcutta.
The. journey inland necessitated a variety of -nodes of travel and frequent changes, train, river-boat, motor ear, a punt propelled by a native with a bamboo pole, and finally a motor launch —a journey which prosed to'bo anything but monotonous. At one stage, in the train journey from Calcutta to (ioalnndn. Miss Macdonald had the unique experience of being the only white woman amongst several hundred passengers.
