FURRY GOLDMINE
PROFITS FROM ‘ ‘ BUNNY ’ ’ SYDNEY, June 14. The rabbit-trapper's lot, especially in this frosty weather, is not a particularly happy one, for he does, most of his work at night, or in the early morning. x But the subsequent fat cheques provide ample compensation. This season, rabbits have been very abundant, and millions have been sent to various country freezing works or to tho city. For every frozen carcaso marketed at least 12 are skinned, thero and then, and these skins find a ready market all over the world. So far this month, including 173 tons that will be auctioned to-morrow, 534 tons of skins have been, sold in Sydney. “First pelts" averaging about five to tho pound, realise 8s per lb., or Is 7d each, which means that thore is more profit in trapping for skins than carcases. Average, or second, pelts run six to the lb., and, roughly, from 3.5 to 20 million skins have been marketed in Sydney during the past three weeks.
