HERD TESTING
x MANAWARU'S RECORD The immense value of herd-testing, as a factor in increasing dairy production, is demonstrated in a remarkable manner by the figures of the Manawaru group of the New Zealand Herd-testing Association. The figures speak for themselves: — Season. Av. test. 1D23-24 .. .. 2423 b. 1024-25 .. .. 2571 b. 1925-26 .. .. 2831 b. 192 U-27 .. .. 3171 b.
Average increase over four years, 751 b. '
The group consists of 29 herds comprising 1581 cows. The increased return which the inereased yield represents is Jl-i 13a per cow, or approximately £7OOO per annum for the group. The group figures have been checked against those of their factories and nre absolutely authentic.
The association has under test h'o,ooo cows, and the average over all is 2551 b. of butter per cow for 250 days.—This represents over 111), per
cow per day—a record not reached by tiny olluu- association. It will be readily seen, therefore, that herd selection through a system of testing such as that adopted by the Now Zealand Co-operative herd-testing Association, is probably the easiest and, safest road to increased production.
