THIS WEEK'S RAIN
PASTURES BENEFIT BY SOAKING The good soaking rain experienced this week will have a beneficial effect upon the pasture land of the district. Despite the rain which had fallen previously farmers declared the country was in need of a good soaking. This week's rain, however, was of a cold nature, and where stock were not covered they must, have suffered severely. The local farms have a fair amount of shelter, which, however, was not of much value in such a lengthy downpour. Many farmers cover their dairy herds in the cold, boisterous weather, and in such cases there would be a little suffering among the stock, but in the other herds there are bound to be ill-effects caused by such a long spell of cold, damp conditions. However, no serious losses have been reported. It is not expected that the downpour will have any serious effect upon the sheep, which have now" thick coats sufficiently greasy to throw off practically all the rain.
The amount of land flooded was very small, and it, may safely be said that no damage was done. It isj to be assumed, therefore, that the rain has done more good than harm to the man on the land.
