In a lecture held under the auspices of the Medical Society, -Dr. Poato said statistics show that the incidence of goitre has definitely increased during the lost 20 years. lie pointed oat also that goitre was much more common in women, and said the present day woman endeavors to attract the opposite sex by living up to the standard of the male! This, be considered, was offering a physkial insult to tin' thyroid ghiud, and it' modern girls "continue their perpetual jazzing, cigarettes, cocktails, and the quest for excitement, they cannot but expect, a debilitating effect •upon the nervous system, and a greater prevalence of exophthalmic goitre." Dr. i'oato quoted statistics collected at one of Sydney's leading hospitals showing the disappointing results obtained by X-ray treatment of ophthalmic goitre, the slow progress in many cases under purely medical treatment, and the excellent results obtained 1 by surgery in suitable cases.
