134 NEW 'PLANES FOR. U.S.A. MANY MORE TO COME Large additions are to be made to the naval and military air strengths of the United States. Contracts have been placed by the Navy Department for the purchase of 154 machines at a cost of about £341,800. Of these, 32 will be Loeing land lighters to complete the complement of the aircraft-carrier Saratoga, 32 will be Curtiss fighters for the aircraft-car-rier Lexington, and the remaining TO are NY-2 training 'planes to replace the obsolete NG. In addition, the navy has purchased a Ford transport 'plane. In the U.S. Army Air Corps, in furtherance of the five-year expansion programme, contracts amounting to £293,000 have been let for 64 new machines. These include nine Loaning amphibian 'planes, 45 Curtiss O-l Falcons as attack and observation machines, and 10 Curtiss O-ll for service tests. If the tests of the last-named prove satisfactory 35 more will bo ordered for National Guard units throughout the country.
