JUMPED PROM TRAIN (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. "You are very fortunate to be alive to-day," said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Auckland Police

I Court in imposing a line of £1 10s on David Ellis Corban, of Te Kuiti, |on a charge of leaving a train I while in motion at Auckland station | on May 7. ! James Eaton, a railway porter, said j the defendant had a ticket for To Kuiti, and was told he would not be j allowed on the Limited express, as it j did not stop at Te Kuiti. He be- ! came very indignant, and stated that !he had placed his luggage on the ' Limited. Witness went with him and recovered three parcels from three different carriages. Defendant then said he had another parcel, and insisted on boarding the train again, although told it was about to start. When the train started he jumped off with his hack to the engine, a ridieulj ous thing to do, and fell between two ' carriages. Had not another porter j seized him as he fell ue would have lost his life.

| Leonard Movie said that as the deceased fell he caught hold of a stanchion on the carriage and was dragged along with his feet on the rails. Witness caught him and lifted him to safely. ' Defendant said ho had no intention of jumping off the train, but the .porter caught him by the arm to raake him leave the train, with the result that he lost his grip and fell.
