There was a time that everyone beat a retreat when Pa got the notion in his head to " play himself a tune," and put the notion into effect. Pa was persevering, and when he sat to the piano to pound out, with one finger, some old-time tune, he usually stayed with it until he'd got it finished, if it took him until midnight. The Pla-ola is different from ordinary playerpianos in that the expression is obtainable through the pedals. Pedalling softly, it plays softly. Pedalling with more force, the person playing is enabled to accent where he desires. This allows the person playing to imitate, almost perfectly, the most expert hand playing.
