PONS WINNECKE
SIGHTED FROM HAWERA (Per Press Association.) HAWERA, this day. The Pons-Winnecke comet was picked up hv the llawera Astronomical Society, which is believed to be the first m New Zealand to sight the comet. The comet which rejoices in Ihe name of Pons Winnecke should begin to be visible in the Southern Hemisphere. At the present time it. is low down in the northern horizon, but in July or August it should be a. striking object in our southern skies, although ii will have passed perihelion. This comet is already visible in the Norli.hern Hemisphere. Its return has been eagerly awaited by astronomers, ami if it comes up to expectations it should be visible lo the naked eye, being sal. any rale an easy passage will be accompanied by a me teorie display. By the time Pons Win necke becomes visible to us in New Zealand it will, .unfortunately, be retreating into the confines of space, and therefore growing fainter, but the fascinating uncertainty connected with comets and their behaviour always adds interest to their visits.
