MAYOR'S REPRESENTATIONS CONSIDERATION PROMISED The representations made to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works for the provision of relief work" for Gisborne unemployed are to be con sidered immediately and an early reply despatched, according to telegraphic replies received by the Mayor. Mr. C. E. Armstrong, yesterday. Tho Prime" Minister, Mr. J. G. Ooate*. replied to the Mayor's telegram yesterday afternoon, stating that he would confer with the Minister of Public Works in regard to the request, ana would adviso Mr. Armstrong of their decision as soon as possible. A similar reply was received from Mr. K. S. Williams, who promised that the request fiom Gisborne would receive con sideiation at the earliest, possible date. HARBOR STAFF REDUCED. PROMPT ACTION AT MASTERTON Prompt action by the Masfertnn Borough Council and the Masterton County Council in allocating relief works is expected to absorb most of the married men at present out of work in Masterton. The Borough Council has decided to engage immediately all the married returned soldiers out of work, estimated to number about 15, and a few other married men. POSITION IN WELLINGTON (Per Presa Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Nearly twice as much relief was given ro necessitous cases of unemployment in Wellington last month as was given during the corresponding period last year by the Social Welfare Committee of tho Wellington Hospital Board. At present 244 men in Wellington arc employed on unemployment relief works in the city, and it is hoped to absorb still more next week, said tho Mayor, Mr. O. H. Troup, to-day. It was the council's aim, ho continued, to bring the number up to 350. Even then there would be a large number of men without work. Messrs. R. J. Bell and J. S. Wilson, of the Wanganui Motor Boat and Sailing Club, waited on the unemployment committee at Wanganui and offered £125 to the unemployment fund provided that it would receive a Government subsidy and he expended on the erection of a concrete wall 2Coit. in length cm the river hank at Arinoho, and that the work he carried out by unemployed men.
