( Tho singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a happy gathering to a close. Though there is a certain amount of silt in suspension in the. tidal waters, there is evidence that the flooding of tlie Wainiato resulted in considerable scouring in the channel at the mouth of the river, where tho depth is now from 18in. to 2ft. better than formerly. At full tide the channel is n'ow Oft. deep for a width of 130 ft,, and though soma berthage in the diversion cut was lost through the trapping of silt there, the results of tho fresh, have been beneficial generally. The landing of tho Cumberland's mail from Auckland was delayed for several hours yesterday through the Tuntea finding the state 'of the tide unsuitable during the afternoon, the tender having to wait ia tho bay for the. evening tide.
