FAIRNESS TO MIGRANTS
!' THE RIGHTS OF CITIZENSHIP BRISBANE, June 5. Laying the foundation stone of a new , church at New Farm to-day, Archbishop Buhig said that the one thing in Australia thev ought scrupulously to avoFid •was to blame others for the misfortunes they may have 'brought upon themselves. ■■■*.' If they found other people more painstaking and industrious, and less pleasure loving than they were, it was their plain duty to imitate rather than condemn them. fr Australia could not afford to stigmatise the sons and daughters of any nation who came here to settle and help to develop the .country. As long as these people were law abiding and industrious they should enjoy that, common right which citizenship gave to every one. It "was a despicable thing to nickname, or hold up to scorn or ridicule, immigrants from a leading European country who. were our Allies in war, -and who had behind them a history of culture and learning that any nation might envy. We were not going to • settle industrial problems by playing • the dog in the manger. We were asking for millions more to come to this country. Our duty should be to welcome every man and woman of good character who would'become good Australians. -
