IMPRESSING WOOL BUYERS

! GISBORNE'S SUITABILITY CENTRE FOR SUMMER SALES .Last Monday's wool oddments sale in Gisborne attracted more outside buyers ' than any previous sale here. Some ' firms that had not been previously directly represented had their head 'buyers operating. Many who were not conversant with Poverty Bay conditions, therefore, had their initiation and saw tor themselves that the represent at ions mado for this end for regular summer sales had not been by any means exaggerated. ,J.. The only matter tor regret is that more farmers did not support last -Monday's sale, for, had there been a much ! larger offering still more buyers would i havo been attracted. Apart from this, however, those who are closely connectI ed with the wool business here are highMy gratified with the results and the manner in which they were able to impress the buyers who attended. ~ In the 1920-21 season Gisborne was plaoed on the- roster as a centre for summer sales, but owing to slump' conditions no sale eventuated, and from then on buyers have persistently refused to.agarn include Gisborne. Last Monday, was therefore a splendid opportunity for the Gisborne people, to make an endeavor to impress on the buyers tl|e* §ult|bility of ; thaV fowii fof.snriim'er ', 5 GOOD ROAD ACCESS: Orie of the greatest obstacles which buyers saw in making Gisborne a wool; sale' centre was; means of transit, hut .any fears that these men had in this direction were allayed'during their trip from .Napier to Gisborne, which journey, one stated, was undertaicrn "without a single bump, even to triepassengers in the back seat " Another remarked that the Gisborne-Napier road compared more than favorably with the hill roads in the .South Island. Thu only incident to mar their experience so far as the roads were concerned was that, they were delayed on their return journey by the slip at Matahoura gorge, but it might be explained that such incidents happen even on the main trunK railway, in Weather such as Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay experienced early this week. The buyers had had-some, doubts of the ability of Gisborne to arrange accommodation for the. large numbers who attend the regular wool sales, but it was proved to them that Gisborne 's not backward in this respect. Che American buver expressed the opinion that-the hotel he stayed at in Gisborne during the week-end* was one of the most comfortable he had been in in .New Zealand. • COMMODIOUS STORES.

Other factors which are bound to influence the buyers are the commodious stores and the fact that the purchases for overseas can be got away on oceangoing steamers without any 'expense for transhipment from coastal* traders. Some of the buyers operating here on Monday expressed themselves as being quite satisfied with the way the brokers exhibited thfe wool for sale and in having properly-prepared catalogues. Taking the sale as a whole, it is considered' that Gisborne has advanced a step in the estimation of the woolbuyers, and if this district had any prospects of gaining summer sales thev are considerably brighter than thev wore a week ago.
