Jocular reference was made at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce recently to a telegram from Christchurch, which had appeared in Hie Star regarding the reference by Professor Wall fo a "lost tribe," said td have existed in the Maruiu district (stales the Grey Star). The opinion was expressed that the learned professor could J better occupy his time than in delving into legendary matters of this ' kind. Despite this opinion, however, there are old residents in the district who state that from "inside knowledge" such a people us the professor mentions did exist in the Maruia district, and that the evidence of their having "cursed" u family is to be seen to-day,
