WATER GAINS ACCESS TO MAKURA Buffeted by mountainous seas during a heavy gale, the) Union Steam Ship Uo.’s 11.M.5. Makura arrived at Wellington from Sydney m a. leaking condition on Monday afternoon. The damage to the steamer resulted in water finding its way into a smalt insulated compartment in the bottom of No. 1 hold. The compartment contained no cargo. The water when the ship made port was right up to the outside, water-lme. in order to ascertain the full extent of the. damage, the compartment is being pumped out, so that an examination may be made of the vessel’s hull from .within. The pumping operations on Monday night were slightly hampered through the insulation material having broken away from the side of the compartment. Tlie pumps were blocked at. times by pieces of pumice and charcoal (insulation material) getting into them, and they had to be cleared) from time to time. it was expected, however, that by yesterday morning the hold would be. quite clear of water and a search tor the source of the leak possible. The Makura left. Sydney at 4 p.rn. on Thursday for Wellington, en route to San Francisco. Moderate head winds and seas prevailed until midnight on Saturday, when the wind increased to r. heavy'gale from the south-east, accompanied by high seas. The big vessel, which was rather light, was slowed down, but nevertheless she was severely handled by the elements. Very few of the passengers were able to take their meals owing to seasickness, and experienced considerable relief when the ship entered the calm waters of Wellington harbor.
