RACE SMASH
BIGHT HORSES FALL: MIRACULOUS ESCAPES BROKEN HILL, June 4. A sensational smash occurred at tho South Broken Hill course to-day in tho Novice Handicap. Eight horses fell at the straight entrance. The jockeys had maraculous escapes from death. Bod Alda was killed outright, and Chillany was so badly injured that he had to be destroyed. Four riders—B E. Raven, E. Rodda, 0. Shanahan and A. Armsden— were taken to hospital. Rodda is in a bad condition with concussion, Raven has an injury to the pelvis, Armsden concussion, and Shunalian contusions aud an injured log. The other jockeys whose horses fell were: W. Cameron, J. Chevalley, A. Davis, and W. Harrison. They received minor abrasions and shock, and were given treatment in the course ambulance room.
Riders and horses in the fall were : Tawoo (Chevally), Coralaetus (Kodda), Kerloo (§hanahan), Chillany (Davis), Bob Alda (Harrison), Seakl (B, E. Raven), Anxious Moments (Armsden)', and Admlrette (W. Cameron). Kerloo was the first down. Immediately a cloud bf dust rose. Bob Alda stood on his head and Coralaetus turned a somersault-
Mr Fraser, a stipendiary steward, took evidence from Shanahan, who says his mount w|S the first to fall. The inquiry will bo continued when the injured riders are sufficiently recovered to enablo them to givo evidence.
There was a field of 17 in tho race. Shortly after tho fall, there was interference, for which Cameron was suspended for two months.
