FROZEN MEAT TRADE
CAUSES OF DEPRESSION ANXIETY IN AUSTRALIA (Eleo. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.j (Received June 22, '■'> p.m.) SYDNEY, June 22. "With rel'erence to the depression in the meat trade, the Sydney Morning Herald says: "Cor some time export houses have been losing heavily. Several freezing works have closed down, and a number of exporters have gone out of business. One authority plae.es the exporters' losses at £2,000,000; oilier quarters regard this as a conservative estimate, and point out that the losses continue but cannot go on indefinitely, and if more exporters are forced out of trade owners must suffer. A iiumber id' 'factors have contributed to create this Unsatisfactory position, one of the chief being the increase in the cost. of operating freezing works, which has gone up 100 per cent., while the prices of exported meat in London are down to practically a pre-war level. An organised effort; on the part of the Commonwealth Government, pastoralists, and those interested in Hie meat export trade is strongly urged in order to rest (ire. the position."
