BOROUGH MATTERS.

(To the Editor of the Herald.) Siry—" Dooley,” when speaking of politics and politicians, must have been thinking of the “ man who gets things dime.” Although “Dooley” was then speaking of national politics and politicians when he said, “ When they’re out you’ve got them, when they’re in they’ve got you.” I have just a shrewd suspicion he was also thinking of/those “ who get things done ” in local politics. On would not. expect to see great strides made by a new council and new Mayor making his debut in municipal activities, and after their two months of office l do not expect to see any great achievement, if we are to judge them by their preliminary ranter prior to the great race. Their first, great display of statesmanship was to .put tjie slasher through a week’s holiday previously granted by a former council to its employees. Their second, and perhaps of greater importance to the people of Gisborne who entrusted them with a greater mission, is their unanimous desire to enrol their names on a scroll of fame to be blazoned across the portals of posterity, but primarily to he handed down to the heirs, apparent or .otherwise, so that they at least may see the wonders Dad aspired to and achieved. How puny and insignificant of intelligent people to saddle the borough of Gisborne with the expense of striking a medallion lo .commemorate .perhaps a term of mediocre service as. administrators of the people’s allairs, when their only excuse offered for stopping holidays to any 'outside of salaried, .employees is on the plea of financial ■stringency. In conclusion, I want to remind those gentlemen that honors won take precedence of placo to jdioso selfimposed. Overlooking the city of Auckland is a lone sentinel, just a simple monument, but bearing a wondrous .message—l3i monumentum queen's circimspiee. Sir, may I, for the edification of those who vote their own class of decoration translate that inscription into English : “If you seek his monument, look around you.” Results, and not time wasted over trashy medals, is the slogan, otherwise our councillors will he considering the question of voting a guinea a meeting to themselves to salve their troubled souls. —I am, etc., J. PERRY.
