Mr. F. J. Haughton, of Wairoa, is visiting Gisborne. Mr. W. T. Weill, Surveyor-General, is visiting Gisborne. Misses E. Haughton, H. Mildon, and F. Shand, of Wairoa, are on a holiday visit to .Gisborne. The Marohese de Pinedo has been promoted to the rank of general. He is writing a book on his flight. It will be dedicated to Signor Mussolini. Mr. C P. Moule, the examiner for tho Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music, is visiting the Dominion, and is now in Dunedin.

Mr. John Farrefl, of the managerial staff of J. C Williamson, Ltd., who underwent an operation last week, js now making satisfactory progress towards recovery.

Mr. J. C. Hardy, hon. secretary of the Poverty Bay Fruitgrowers' Association, returned yesterday from Wellington, where he attended the annual conference of the New Zaland Federation. Mr. Hardy expressed the opinion that the conference was an excellent gathering, and that the discussions which took place there would greatly assist in the advancement of the industry. The amateur enthusiasms of Gisborne are anxious to induce Mr. P. H. Francis, a newly arrived athlete, to participate in harrier events during tin* winter. Mr. Francis, who has joined Mr. Ernest Edmonds, M.A., in the conduct of St. Winifred's, is a graduate of Bambridge University, England, and' was considered one of the finest Jong-distance runners in Great Britain. He was selected as reserve man in the English crosscountry team for the international events, but his Welsh origin prevented his acceptance of the post. Mr. Francis was regarded by British athletic authorities as a promising Olympic representative, and he will be welcomed 1 in local amateur circles.
