POVERTY BAY HOUNDS
(By "Snaffles.")
The usual large and representative field turned out to meet the hounds at Taruheru on Saturday, members existing up from places as far distant as Ngatapa, Panikau, and far beyond Whata 1 tutu, to swell the crowd. An unusual feature of the day was the scarcity of hares, due largely to the attention paid to them by the local " long dogs " and to the fact that what hares there were, were mostly congregated in a series of large maizo paddocks from which it was hard to dislodge them. One was eventually got away from a maize paddock by the creek near Hansen road, hut the hounds being divided on two or three others, it. was some minutes before the body of the pack was got together on her line, and they were only able to hunt slowly to the cemetery, where the scent gave out. After a good long draw, another hare was found in a paddock of rushes. The hounds got away on good terms with her, and provided a merry gallop over the dairy farms, across Slaughterhouse road, and right-handed to the HextonGisbo.rne main road, down which they raced her into view, and the " whoowhoop!" sounded as they pulled her down by the drive gates leading up to the residence of the late Mr. Henry White.
The rest of the day was uneventful, the usual draws being blank, and though a return, was made to the maize paddocks as a last recourse, the cover was so thick there that it was found impossible to force another hare away with the hounds on terms.
