MENACE OF COMMUNISM

AWAKENING IN CHINA OPPOSITION REORGANISED STATEMENT BY CHANG (Elcc. Tel. Copyright— United Press Assn.i (Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) (Received .Tune 21. 10 a.m.) ,SHANGHAI, Juno 19. Chang Tso-Lin is assuming the posi-

tion of generalissimo for the suppression of the "Reds." This office becomes virtually the Dictatorship for Northern China. Interviewed by the North China Daily News, he .said Russian intrigue was so effective that it is now apparent that nothing but the concerted •action of those opposed to Communism could save the country from being overrun and destroyed by mob rule under Russian instigation. "I have therefore been obliged," he said, "to invite all officials still holding out against Bolshevism at Pekin to confer with me upon the matter of .forming a single organisation to save the country. There has been a frank, •honest exchange of opinion during the conference and we are convinced that 'if we can. effect a closely-knit con- , solidation under ft single central authority, the Government of China has sufficient military to save the situation. On this basis.it is possible to reorganise the Pekin Government which we shall support and defend as .the Government of China, until we stuccoed in blowing out completely the political disease with which the Russians inoculated our people, and until wo have restored the country to sanity with a sound honest Government representative of the whole Chiuese people both north and south."
