Having avoided arrest since April 6, Douglas Charles Hopewell, 28, described as a surveyor, was charged in the Christchurch Police Court on Saturday with obtaining EH bs by moans oi a valueless cheque. It was stated by Detective Studholme that other charges are pending. Hopewell was remanded in custody.
■Some time on Friday evening thieves entered the butchery shop of C. Were, Colombo street, Christchurch, and stole a package containing 640 pennies which had been left in the cooler, wliioh was not locked. A till containing only three pennies was not touched. The National Dairy Show at Palmerston North concluded on Saturday. Tho gate takings for the week, which total EIBCO, reveal a E2O increase on 1926. 'Hie president, Alr. An inquest was held at Shannon on Saturday concerning the death of Mark Gardiner, who was killed while working on No. 3 dam at Mangahao. A verdict was returned that death was due .to shock through sudden immersion in icecold water. Evidence was given *to the effect that the deceased came in contact, with a live wire not sufficient, to '.kill him, but sufficient to knock him oyer. The deceased must then have rolled oft the dam into the water. ' Gardiner had been warned to tao careful, as another worker had had ij, shock a few hours previously at the same position.
