AUCKLAND TO GISBORNE REDUCTION URGED The reduction or' freights on fertilisers from Auckland to Gisborne and Tolaga' 1 Ray was strongly urged at today meeting of the PovertyBay branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Tin ion. Mr. .1. (V Field moved that the attention of the Minister be drawn to the matter, and that if be also pointed out that the freight from Nauru Island, to Auckland" was : and from Auckland to Gisborne 32/- per foil.' "The, hiffh'costs to us are prohibitive," he fffFded. Mr. M. T. Trafford: Would you add that the cost from Auckland to Tolaga Bay is 42/6? .Mr. Field: We must get assistance. ft will pay the merchants here to help us, as it will mean more business for tliem. Mr, J. 0, Graham: It is not only fertilisers, but everything. The transit of everything is costing us too much. The president, M>- F. S. Bowen, suggested that if it was impossible to obtain a reduction in freight, the Government should help with a subsidy. Mr. J. E. Benson said at one time a suggestion had been made to ask the merchants for'a quote for 200 tons of manure and also for a quote ' for freight on that amount, but'no reply had been received. It Was decided to write to the Minister -ind also to the fertiliser firms on the matter.
