COLLISION IN MID-AIR
PILOTS BURNT TO DEATH (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received June 7, 1 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. Squadron Leader Longlon and a civilian pilot, Mr. Openshaw, were flying in (lie same race when taking, the I urn for the last lap I heir machines collided in mid-air. The wings became ir lerlocked and the planes crashed afire. Squadron Leader Longlon was burned to death, ami Mr. Openshaw died from injuries. The crash occurred two miles from Bournemouth in view of 1 Ityusands of holiday makers and ' near Urn spotwhere Squadron Leader Longlon was fired on sound time ago.
Other ’ aviators saw Ihe, crash and descended. Workers, despite the huge mass of flames, quickly removed Mr. Openshaw, whose machine was on top, from (lie burning debris, hut he died on route to hospital. Squadron Leader Longton’s body was charred beyond recognition and Was not, recovered till the Jinnies wore spent. Squadron Leader Longlon was ono of Mid a-bfest pilots in the Air Force, mid was known as “the King of Stunters.” Mr. Openshaw was married pibont, six Weeks ago.
