OBITUARY
Sir Worley Bassett, Edwards, whose dentil was reported hist week, was born in London in 18130. Tie arrived iu Port Chalmers in 18513. He practised in Wellington from 1877 to 1890, when he was appointed a .judge of the 'Supreme Court, and Native Commissioner. In 1892, however, he left the Bench, ltis appointment being contested, on the ground that the law provided for only five judges. The Government promised to bring iff the necessary legislation to legalise the appointment, but instead it went out of power, and the succeeding Government refused to fulfil the. promise made by the preceding Ministry. Sir Bassett then returned to private practice until 1890, when he was again appointed a judge of the Supreme Court. lie Was created a Knight Bachelor in 1919 and retired front the Bench in 1920. A son of Sir Bassett, Mr. L. L. Edwards, is practising as a barrister in Wellington.
A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Bro. G. W. Sharpies was passed by tlie Manchester Unity Oddfellows last, evening, members standing in silence.
