LACOSTE DEFEATS TILDEN.

The Daily News’ Paris correspondent says Tilden succumbed to Lacoste as the result of one of the hardest games in his career, which lasted 3£ hours and 1 provided a brilliant display. Tilden’s varied attacks would have intimidated, a played less phlegmatic than Lacoste. There were many lengthy rallies, theball once passing the net 61 times. Lacoste, driving to mate a return in the third set, Strained the muscle of his leg and was scarcely able to hobble in tho last three games, but recovered after massage, and brilliantly won the fourth and final sets. Tilden cut. out- the fancy strokes, driving his hardest and came up to the net, but Lacoste was unbeatable and attacked fiercely and led 5—4. With threo cannon ball services which Lacoste did 1 not seem to see, Tilden lovelled the score. Tilden took the next and then when lie had match point Lacoste der spite his leg failing him, recovered, and led 7—6. Tilden equalised. Lacoste secured 1 the fifteenth, and lost the nexttwo, but with a perfect smash brought the score to 9—9. Amid the excitement of the record crowd Tilden double-fault- ■ ing lost tllo final points
