WORK FOR SOLDIERS
G.R.S.A. REQUEST TO COUNCIL MATERIALS FOR ESPLANADE The Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association has forwarded to the Gisborne Borough Council a sum of £SO, which it has asked the council to disburse in providing, employment for returned men, on the further improvement of the lvaiti Esplanade in the vicinity of the Memorial. The G.R.S.A. has suggested that the council should forward the scheme by supervising the expenditure of the money, and Asks that the fund should be entirely devoted to the payment of wages. A certain amount of material may be required for the improvement of the river bank at the point indicated, and the council is requested to find the necessary material, as its contribution to the solving of ex-servicemen’s difficulties. The Citizens’ Defence Committee lias already subsidised the R.S.A. fund at the rate of £1 for £l, and should the council accede to the request put. forward, the public will gain the satisfaction o? knowing that the money donated on Poppy Day is being put into the beautifying of the town, that men are being taken from the lists of unemployed, and that such payments ns are made from the fund will represent work dnno in the interests of the community.
