INTOXICATED MOTORISTS FINED

(Per Press Association.' AUCKLAND, last night. A fine of £25 tor being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-ear was imposed on Alfred Roy Wilson Ellis, 25, in the Police Court to-day. Evidence was given that accused collided with a safety zone and ran away, pursued by a traffic inspector. An empty gallon jar that had contained beer was in the ear, but accused denied that ho had any of it, saying that the two other men had finished tho jar between them, while ho had a bottle of lemon squash. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt, said the story was “too thin” altogether. Accused admitted he had later had three light shandies.

Constable Gawer said he telephoned seven doctors asking them to go to the police, station to examine accused, but they refused when they heard accused had no money. Finally Dr. Maskell examined accused, and considered he was not under the influence of liquor. ihe Magistrate said that having duo regard to the doctor’s examination, he had no doubt that accused had a. few more beers than he should have. He had a bad record lor by-law offences, and in addition to the line his license would be cancelled for two years.
