POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

(By "Snaffles.") Hounds met on Tuesday at the kennels to hunt in the hills, where a small field of enthusiastic lovers of hound work were rewarded with a sight of a really beautiful hill hunt. The first hour was hard on the hounds, as the country was full of fresh hares, but the scent was good and a great deal of work was successful in getting the hares well scattered away for the scrub. A fresh draw was successful in finding a fresh hare and, with her companions scattered to the four winds, the hounds. were ab}e to put up a really pretty show. The sun, which had been repeatedly shining in fitful burets, remained obscured now, and a light rain falling made scenting conditions idealThe hounds ran her hard with rare music over the hills for about half-an-lionr, when she could be seen running fairly beaten. She kept up before the hounds, however, and going down a long spur with a final burst of speed, she ran a long foil in some rashes and travelled on. The hounds swung down the hillside after her, ran the foil beautifully, and stuck to her for another 10 minutes, when she started dodging and doubling round a small spur. The hounds then ran into her dead beat, after an ideal hill hunt of som6 45 minutes. The young entry were much admired for the excellence of their work, the fresh strain of .blood from the imported English stock showing well to the fore throughout.
