THE KAITI TRAGEDY
FUNERAL OF MRS. PETTIT (Special to the Herald.) WAI'ROA, this day. What is probably one of the final scenes in the after events of the Kniti tragedy was enacted here on Sunday, when the mortal remains of the late Mrs. l’ettit (nee Queenie While) were laid to rest in the Wairoa cemetery. "Shortly after 1.15 p.m. the coffin containing the remains of the dot eased lady came in sight on To L hi hill, followed by a number of cars containing the chief mourners and Gisborne friends. The casket was placed in the aisle in front of the chancel. The assemblage ■was a large one, including many Gisborne friends of the deceased, every seat being occupied, and many had to stand outside. The vicar of St. Paul’s Church, the Rev. J. A Shardlow. officiated, and the organist was Mr. E. Wilson. At the cemetery, the Rev. F. A. Bennett, of Hastings, after the Maori funeral hymn had been sung, delivered a- stirring ovation in the Maori language for the benefit of the large number of native present and on their behalf.
