U.S.A. SEA POWER

WILL BE INCREASED PROPOSED ELEVATION OF GUNS (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association., (Received Jan. 17, 11 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. The House Naval Affairs Committee, in its report, declared that the elevation of guns on 13 battleships would not conflict with the spirit of the Washington Arms Treaty, but added that the President must determine whether the work should be undertaken. The Committee’s report indicates the intention of enlarging the United States sea power on the theory that foreign building programmes have disarranged the treaty ratios. The proposed elevations would give a range of approximately 24,000 yards on the older vessels and 34,000 yards on the Oklahoma and Nevada. The elevation proposal was defeated last session in the House, but members who then opposed it are. now thought to be favorable to the plan.
