RUNAWAY TRAIN

SIGNALMAN'S PRESENCE OF

MIND

LONDON, Dec. 7. Remarkable presence of mind was shown by a signalman at Colbren, in Swansea Valley, in twice diverting a runaway goods train, thus' averting what would have been a serious disaster. The goods tram was descending a gradient overlooking Craig-y-Nos Castle, the home of the late Madame Patti, when the brakes failed and the train dashed towards the junction with the main line, where a passenger train was due. The signalman promptly diverted the runaway train to a branch line, and here another passenger train was due. The driver and fireman of the goods train leapt, but the signalman in the nick of time again diverted the goods train to a siding, where it. crashed. The guard escaped unhurt.
