“PUSH WARFARE

FIERCE SKIRMISH INNOCENT ONLOOKER (ATTACKED MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. About 50 youths became involved in a fierce “push” fight at the corner of Queen’s Parade and Pelbridge street, Fitzroy, at 9 o’clock on Saturday night. In groups and individually, rival combatants fought, and there were many casualties. A car-load of police, specially equipped for dealing with “pushes,” was despatched to the scene. Before its arrival, however, a cable tram had pulled up, and Leslie Healey, 17, of Roseneath street, Clifton Hill, stepped off to have a look at the fight. He was mistaken by hooligans for one of their opponents, and was immediately attacked. Within a few seconds Healey was knocked unconscious with a piece of wood.

The police then arrived and dealt with the hooligans who had not made oft. One man, who was believed vo have struck Healey, was arrested. Healey was taken to Melbourne hospital, where he was treated for head injuries and extensive facial •lacerations.
