THE TANGAROA FATALITY

INQUEST ON WILLIAM JONES (Herald Correspondent.) An inqittest was held on Christmas Eve touching on the death of William Jones. Mr. J. "Coi-kill was deputy coroner, Sergeant Wade- conducted the proceedings, and the following comprised the jury: G. Kirk (foreman), H. A. Bygum, It. S. Patterson and T. Lambert. Dr. E. B. Jardine stated that he was called to the s.s. Tangaroa and found deceased lying in his bunk. Death was primarily due to I lie torsion of the intestine, which set up heart failure. There were no signs of violence. J. W. Tate, seaman on the Tangaroa, stated' that he occupied the same quarters as deceased. Deceased was not on duty on the voyage from Napier. Witness called deceased and, not getting an answer, went to the bunk and found him dead.. He had not heard deceased complain except about nine months previously. Sergeant Wade stated that deceased was a single man about 54 years of age, and had been employed by Richardson and Co. since 1913. He found no signs of violence on the body.

The jury found " that the deceased 1 , William Jones, died on board the Tangaroa on December 23 from intestinal strangulation, setting up heart failure.*"
