UNIONISTS WANT JOBS * MANY remain On Saturday the managers of the Poverty x Bay freezing works received advice .if coin;,Mr. C. E. Bickford, secretary of the. Freezing Workers' Union, lo the effect "that the members of the union Ejact'.decided' to apply for work forthwith in terms :of the settlement made in Wellington on November 22. The men applied for work, this morning, and a man. her 5 were employed. . ■ The position'at the freezing works js that a number of the volunteer workers have decided to remain ' on for the season, and the companies are in honor honnd to allow them to continue. The result of was that only 25 of the 70 tjinionists who applied for work at Kaiti, were able to be given employment. Of these, 11 were butchers, and the works are now. sufficiently well staffed to kill available. f.The volunteer workers have all applie** to become-members of the union, so that thpy now have Ithe same status as the ordinary union members. It will be some time before' the works will be sufficiently busy to engage all the men who' are looking for employment there, but a few more will probably be needed towards the close of this week. ■lt is anticipated that 2000 sheep and lambs will-be idled at -Kaiti to-day, and the number will steadily increase from now Qlt. y,- t l. MASTERTON, last night. . -Twenty-three unionist slaughtermen commenced at Waingawa freezing wprks on Saturday morning and the volunteer butchers who wished to continue were kept on. A corresponding number of laboring hands also reported for work- The management report that everything is back to nortttvU.
