THROUGH THE ROOF
SAFE-DOOR'S FLIGHT VIOLENT EXPLOSION BRISBANE, Nov. 23. Shortly after 2 o'clock on Saturday morning a crowd of people awaiting the arrival of the Rockhampton-Lns-bane mail train at Gympio railway station were startled by a loud explosion at the grocery shop of Thurecht Bros, 100 yards distant In the bright moonlight a largo black object was seen to burst through the roof, accompanied by sparks. Two men walked casually out of the store's front door, but ran when chased by police officers and railway porters, and dropped a swag on the roadway. Both wer,e caught. Later in the morning Arthur Gurrey, 35, and Jacob Russell, 20, were remanded for eight days on a charge of breaking and entering. The iron safe in the store had been skittered. The force of the explosion was so great that the door was blown through the roof, cutting a jagged hole through the ceiling. The swag found in the roadway contained plugs of gelignite, detonators, coil of fuse, brace and bit, skeleton keys, a cold chisel, hack saws and electric torch, gloves, tiles, and a firstaid kit.
