N.S.W. PLAYS QUEENSLAND

•Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Iriejss Atau BRISBANE, November 2(5.

For the first time in the Sheflield Shield match competition, Queensland participated and commenced a match against New South Wales in fine, dull weather and on a good wicket. New South Wales in the first innings made 280 (Phillips .'59, Kippax .127, Sonnes 38). Mayes took four wickets for d2 and G. Oxenham four for 5(5.

Queensland have lost three wickets for f>7 (L. Oxenham til). Kippax batted brilliantly and gave a polished exhibition, scoring freely all round the wicket. He never appeared troubled by the bowling, which had the remainder of the team in difficulties.

FOR TEST PLAYERS,

(Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association.) LONDON, November 25.

The Daily Express gives prominence to a cable message from its Melbourne correspondent referring to the bonus proposal for test cricketers, quoting the assertion of some Australian cricketers who have returned “broke” and comparing Hirst’s £3OOO from his benefit, with the treatment of Ernie .Tones, who is stated to be working on the Adelaide wharves, and George Griffon, who is holding a minor job in the post office. The Dailv Express, in a footnote, says: “It is necessary to remember that the Australians come as amateurs and are accorded all the privileges of tin? amateur status, whereas Hirst is a professional who depended ov the game for his livelihood.”
