DUST.
(To ttic Editor of the Herald.) Sir. — Permit me to etui attention io the plague of dust in Uladstone road. How is ir when a high wind blows, and clouds of dust are raised, that the water-carts are not brought into immediate use.' There is a complete or partial remedy: why is it not at mice applied? Is it necessary to wait for rain to fall, and then to supplement flint fall with the water-cart, or to lake action when the dust has been completely swept from the roads into
tho throats and lungs of the people, into the shops of the tradespeople, into every nook and cranny; or to delay till the following day to sen if the wind abates and the clouds roll by? Surely
there is not now any shortage of water to plead as an excuse. This is not a present-day grievance only but a perennial one, and all the harder to endure patientlv as it is more or less avoidable. The present system or want of system does not meet the needs of ihe public. Tt is altogether unfair that tradesmen who deal in delicate and mavbe costly fabrics, or in musical instruments or jewellery, or other easily dam a gable goods, should be subject to) henvv losses and depreciation from. wind-blown dust. Nor must the additional labor required in business establishments be overlooked. A still more serious matter is that oi the health of the community- Do the responsible officials realise what distinct and proven menace to health is occasioned bv these dust storms? However careful butchers, restauraiit-
kcopers, confectioners, fruiterers and other purveyors of food si lifts may be, iliev cannot fully prelect their goods from contamination. On Friday front !) a.m. until 2 p.m. (lie condition of affairs in Gladstone road and the adjoining streets was abominable, disgraceful, exasperating. As far as mv observation ■went no water-cart was used; perhaps for tin- very simple reason that the dust was not sufficientlv pronounced as to be obvious- to those to whom we naturally look for
