COTTAGE DESTROYED
FIRE AT WAIPAOA A four-roomed cottage at -'Waipaoa was completely desti’oyed by fire at an early hour this morning, despite the efforts of a volunteer fire brigade to save the building and contents. The house is owned by Nelson’ N.Z. Ltd., and was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. G. McMinn. It was one of a row of cottages built for the workmen at the freezing works, and when the fire was discovered, anxiety was felt for the safety of the other dwellings in the row'. The brigade prevented the spread of the flames.
Mr. and Mrs. McMinn and a little girl were asleep in the cottage at the time of,the outbreak, which appears to have started in the kitchen. So quickly did the flames spread that when awakened, Mrs. McMinn had to escape through a bedroom window. The contents of the house were destroyed, and Mr. McMinn will be a loser by a considerable amount, though his furniture and effects were covered by a policy for £l9s* in the National office.
