WAIKANAE BEACH

OPENING OF SEASON The official opening of the season at the Waikanae Beach yesterday coincided with the holding of a carnival in aid of the Macrae Baths fund, and the two functions created an usual degree of enthusiasm. The crowds that gathered on the beach during the afternoon and evening must have constituted a record, and the carnival spirit was evidenced by the keen participation of the public in dancing and games of various kinds arranged for them. The beach season and the carnival were opened during the afternoon by the Mayor, Mr. G. Wildish, who commented that this would probably be his last opportunity of acting in the capacity of president of the society. He congratulated the organisers of the carnival on their energy and completeness of the arrangements, and wished them every success in the financial sense. Mrs. Wildish also spoke briefly on the subject of the valuo of the beach to the community, and the good work the society was doing in keeping its claims before the public.

Fun and frolic filled the afternoon and evening, many residents of Kaiti assisting actively at the carnival. Dancing for which the City Band and a. string orchestra provided the music, and treasure hunts, races for children and various games of skill offered opportunity of amusement to everyone. The weather was a little chilly during the afternoon, but was more favorable in the evening and so enhanced the en joyment of the carnival.
