EDUCATION COSTS (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, this day. ( Replying to a deputation of the Wei lington East Girls' College Parents' Association the Hon. 11, A. Wright said it seemed to him that an alteration in piolicy was needed to ensure that pupils should remain sufficiently long in secondary schools to derive benefit from their instruction.

SENTENCE OF A YOUTH WELLINGTON, this day. A youth, Arthur David Horace Porter, appeared before Mr. Justice Alpers- for sentence for breaking and entering ami lb eft at Eketahuna. Mr. Parry, for the prisoner, said he was very overgrown for his age, being only 17, ai:d 6ft. tall. He- appeared overgrown physically, but was not developed mentally. He- characterised Porter's actions as those of a kleptomaniac. Counsel said he stole a packet of cigarettes, not to smoke, but for the picture. The* other thefts were of .small ariiclea. Counsel agreed probation was out of tiro question, and submitted that in the best interests of the lad he should be detained in a Borstal institution for as short a term as possible.

PROBATION GRANTED CHRISTCIUURCH, this day. Probation was granted William Francis Halliburton, of Ashburton, when he came up for sentence to-day for receiving £152 18s lid, and failing to account for it, and for stealing £6C4 15s 7d front Mrs. N. S. McArthur. Mr. Justice Stringer said the case gave him much anxiety. He believed that Halliburton had not intended dishonestly to appropriate the moneys, and would have repaid except for the failure of his business, resulting from the slump in land values. The judge imposed special conditions that he pay the cost of the, prosecution within three months from date, and thereafter that he mak« restitution of the full amount as soon as possible.

ALLEGED MAIL BAG THEFT CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A young man was arrested this morning in Obristehurch on a charge of having stolen a mail bag. The theft is alleged to have occurred a few days ago, the mail being in. transit from Waimuto to Christchurch. The man was employed as a mail sorter at the Christchurch office.
