EREACII OF PROMISE ALLEGED (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. The hearing commenced in the Supreme Court this morning of an action wherein Alice Josephine Ureagan, supervisor of the telephone exchange at Palmerston North, is claiming front Hugh Parker, a commercial t raveller, of Whnugavei, £795 damages for alleged breach of promise to marry. The statement of claim sets out that plaintiff and defendant- had agreed to marry at Easter, 1925, but defendant in November, 1924, refused to do so. Plaintiff in consequence thereof suffered a nervous shock, and for a considerable time was rendered unfit to carry out her duties. The statement- of defence admitted the agreement to marry plaintiff, defendant. "stating that after a contract- to marry had been entered into and while the contract was still subsisting, plaintiff imported into it a condition that all issue of the marriage be brought up in the religion of the Roman Catholic Church. Defendant, refused to be bound by gnch a, condition and! was wholly exonerated and discharged by plaintiff from the performance of the promise, or, alternatively, the contract was rescinded or lapsed, or lapsed by mutual consent.
