OBITUARY

WELL-KNOWN POLICE OFFICER (Special to the Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Supt. VV. Mathioson, whoso death occurred in Dunedin, was extremely well-known and was a highly respected officer of the New Zealand police force, in which body he had a long and useful career. In the early days of his life ho was stationed at. Lumsden, Southland, whore he was eon,stable in charge and filled a number of offices usually allotted to a country police station. He eventually was promoted to sergeant, and his advancement from then on was rapid. Deceased was stationed at Christchurch for some years as senior-sergeant and sub-inspector. From Christchurch he went to Napier, having been promoted to the rank of inspector. Shortly afterwards he was again promoted and went to Dunedin, where he established ins headquarters as superintendent- in Gauge of the Otago district, llis death is .sincerely regretted by members, of the police force and by the general public.

REV. SAMPSON STEPHENS

The Rev. Sampson Stephens, v:«ir oi :Te Puke, died in Gisborne yesterday, • aged 60 years, and widespread regret will ho felt at the news of his demise. The late Mr. Stephens, who was born i in Victoria, was given his first- charge in New Zealand at Clyde, Lingo, 17 I years ago, and about two years ago ho ) became vicar of the Anglican Church iat Te Puke. There he won for himself a host of friends, hi s admirable dispose ■' lion endearing him to all with whom he icamo in contact. Mrs. Stephens predeceased her husband many years ago, and when lie contracted his fatal illness (at Te Puke recently the late Mr. Stevens I came to Gisborne to be eared for by his daughter. The deceased leaven two 'daughters, one of whom is a. teacher at the Gisborne High School, and the otlioi !at the Thames High School. The funeral ! took place at the Tarohevu Cemetery ; this afternoon, the cortege leaving Holy Trinity Church at 2.30 p.m.
