GUARANTEE RENEWAL LAST SEASON'S LOSSES (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Government has decided, on the recommendation of the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, to providte N a further guarantee for exporters of New Zealand apples and pears for the coming season. The opinion is held officially that although last season's experience under the fruit guarantee was this is a growing industry involving intensive cultivation and high production from land unsuitable for arable, or dairy farming, and is consequently well worth encouragement in the struggling stage*. Fruitgrowers, through organisation and the. Government grading system, are exporting lines which compare very favorably with those from Competitive countries. In renewing the guarantee the Government has elitninated any undertaking to give growers a profit of Id per lb., as was the ease under the former arrangements. It has substituted a guarantee, up to lOs 6d per case, of the expenses involved in marketing and packing.
