EMPIRE TRADE

BRITISH GOODS WEEK INCREASING INTEREST Though the majority of traders .report that the British .goods week has not yet; shown any substantial increase in trade, there is general satisfaction with the results of the effort as shown in the increased public interest in the products of the Empire. One retailer stated that, as a result of the propaganda connected with the shopping week campaign, at least one out of every three who entered' his shop indicated a desire to see only British goods. The effort will come to a close on Saturday, when an endeavor _will be made to arouse a little of the carnival spirit in the town. Bunting will bo displayed on many of the buildings in the main street, merchants having agreed to deck their premises for thu occasion. Special new window displays are projected by several firms, and the' City Band will parade the'town dining the afternoon, to signalise the close of an effort upon which it is hoped to improve greatly next year. The present campaign has added little to (he turnover of the shops, and to the credit of the tradespeople it must be recorded that this has not affected their enthusiasm for the cause of British trade. Next year, one retailer suggested, they should get to work earlier, and prepare a more comprehensive plan, which might, include .special, films oh tainable from the Home County for occasions such as this, ami perhaps lectures ami. demonstrations indicating the superiority of Empire goods. The current shopping week had indicated to them many points at'which next year's effort, could, bo improved, and he was confident that the educative effort they had made would have good results. Traders are .unanimous in the opinion that 1 -hough there may he no increase in the amount of business done in consequence of tin; shopping week, a bigger pronortion of trad 1 © will .be done in the products of the Empire.
